March 2023, it’s crazing, a lot of things spring up this month. Generative AI Ecosystems are building rapidly. In particular, Microsoft and OpenAI, Google and Anthropic, and Baidu, each laying out their landscapes.

To Generative AI, “Spring is coming”

In March 2023, there are 6 key trends:

1. Quick apply: The giants, Microsoft and Google have quickly incorporated the power of Generative AI into their products and platforms.
2. New process: The GPT4 and ChatGPT Plugins platform has been released, and many enterprises and start-ups are discovering new possibilities based on the latest GPT technology.
3. Real competitor: Baidu has launched Ernie Bot first and signed 300+ partners to push forward. More Chinese giants are being deployed in full swing.
4. Start-ups’s war: Many start-ups have raised millions to compete in this race, and some are even based on OpenAI’s GPT technology. In the field of AI writers and copywriting tools, for example, there are companies such as Writesonic, HyperWriteAI, Canva Magic Write, and more.
5. Celebrity disruption: a number of entrepreneurs, VPs and researchers announced own AI business.S Such as Alibaba VP Yangqing Jia to quit and start own AI Business with Amazon Distinguished Scientist / VP Alex Smola(more in ChatGPT Effect Part 4: AI Talent competition). On the other hand, Gary Marcus, Elon Musk and others called called for a temporary pause on training systems exceeding GPT-4.
6. Safety and Privacy: AI principles are mentioned frequently and at length in official articles and development documents to inform and standardize the users on how to use AI. 31 March 2023, Italy blocked ChatGPT over privacy concerns, and Germany is considering following Italy in banning ChatGPT.

2. OpenAI(GPT) and Microsoft vs Anthropic and Google

At present, there are two large groups: OpenAI(GPT) and Microsoft vs Anthropic and Google

2.1 The 2023 OpenAI(GPT) and Microsoft Ecosystem Landscape

OpenAi has a commercial ambition, and with Microsoft’s support, it’s growing bigger and bigger. A stable, robust business ecosystem is coming out.

Just as Elon Musk said “OpenAI has become a closed source, maximum-profit company effectively controlled by Microsoft.“

OpenAI was created as an open source (which is why I named it “Open” AI), non-profit company to serve as a counterweight to Google, but now it has become a closed source, maximum-profit company effectively controlled by Microsoft.

It’s not like an open-source or non-profit company should do.

A human-like robot with AI capabilities, even if it cannot leap, bound, or backflip like Boston’s Atlas robots, would still be impressive and have the potential to shock or frighten everyone.

2.1.2 ChatGPT plugins

I think it’s a controllable AI platform like Apple APP store. Since OpenAI launched ChatGPT and API, a lot of developers, start-ups, and enterprises are trying to integrate GPT into their products to unlock a vast range of possible quickly. It’s uncontrollable, and not good for OpenAI’S commercial strategy. So the ChatGPT plugins platform is a brilliant move:

• Avoid abusing GPT/model to have a negative impact
• Locking in developers with AI needs and Seize the AI technology market(Technology replacement incurs significant costs)
• Help OpenAI to study their real-world use in multiple fields

2.1.3 Diverse partners

OpenAI has established partnerships with many companies and organizations to jointly promote the application and development of AI technology. Bain & Company, a top management consulting firm, announced services alliance with OpenAI , and helped Coca-Cola become the first company in the world to combine GPT-4 and DALL-E for a new AI-driven content creation platform “Create Real Magic“.

2.1.4 Microsoft’s support

Regardless of whether OpenAI is controlled by Microsoft or not, Microsoft and its subsidiaries are integrating GPT in their Products for more users in daily life. It is a win-win, as it allows users to become dependent on their products quickly, and generate and feedback more data to train their model.

At the same time, Microsoft helps eliminate some potential competitors. According to Bloomberg, Microsoft Threatens Data Restrictions In Rival AI Search.

2.1.5 Start-ups with strong dependencies

Many start-ups are based on OpenAI’s AI and obtain investments. With GPT power, planes to Gundam, they have more competitive market competition. This doomed them to be closely associated with OpenAI, and they are following it now and in the future.

2.2 The 2023 Anthropic and Google Ecosystem Landscape

ANTHROP\C, like a well-behaved child, diligently doing his job. Google(Alphabet), like a chaotic, unstable universe.

2.2.1 Three core AI Teams

In this group, Google(Alphabet) has own two teams, plus ANTHROP\C team.

• Google AI – Bard
• DeepMind – Sparrow
• ANTHROP\C – Claude

This may appear as a diverse and decentralized deployment strategy that enhances competitiveness and possibilities. However, to outsiders, it may seem chaotic and lacking a concerted effort to promote one particular entity to compete against OpenAI.

2.2.2 In Google, the AI teams are constantly changing

• 29 Mar. 2023, according to The Information, Google Brain and DeepMind Pause Grudges, Join Forces to Chase OpenAI
• 29 Mar. 2023, according to CNBS, Google is reorganizing its Assistant team to focus more on Bard.

Hey Google, do you still remember ANTHROP\C, the company in which you invested $300 million in February 2023?

2.2.3 Google’s support

• for Google AI, bring Generative AI in Google Workspace in 15 Mar. 2023 (the day before Microsoft announced Microsoft 365 Copilot with GPT-4)

2.2.4 Google AI’s investments

In Google AI website, they have a AI-focused venture fund – Gradient Ventures. They invested in nine start-ups between November 2022 and March 2023. It seems like they are scouting for AI start-ups to pave the way for artificial intelligence.

2.3 Smart Salesforce

Salesforce is not betting solely on one. Salesforce is embracing two groups, and even a third one.

• 7 Mar. 2023, Salesforce Ventures Launched $250M Generative AI Fund, invested in in four companies, including Anthropic, Cohere, Hearth.AI, and You.com.

3. Two worlds, Two Generative AI giants

Until now, there are many models-surprisingly small and easy/cheap to reproduce, and some of them can run on personal computers. This has led some technology companies or individuals to believe that they can participate in this AI competition. But they forgot somethings: data, training, tuning…etc.

It’s like buying a F1 Race Car, you can drive it on road or park it in in the garage. There are no tech teams to help you repair and maintain your F1 race car, no circuits to showcase its performance, and no events that allow more people to enjoy it.

It is just a car, or for the people around you, “Wow, it’s F1 Car.”

To become an AI giant, there must be a strong giant behind it, or you are the giant.

5 Basic Key Points:

• AI Team: An independent research team with well-known researchers/scientists in the field.
• Computing power: Supports the training of large models.
• Diverse products: Has a large user base and a variety of products across different fields, supporting the application of AI technology and data training.
• Partners: Covers the AI application market and extends technology applications through partnerships.
• Financials : Uh, this is a must.

There would be two worlds: China, United States and others. Ultimately, there will be one dominant player in each world.

• China: The competition is just beginning
• United States and others: i think it would be OpenAI(GPT) and Microsoft
